Founded in 2023 by Charmeshia Allen, Daughters Journey to Freedom Ministries (DJTF) was born out of personal and professional experiences in maternal health. The primary goal is to address healthcare inequities and other disparities as well as educate others on the Maternal Health Bill of Rights (MHBoR). Our efforts focus on keeping women whole.
The Daughters Journey to Freedom (DTJF) annual program includes 2 community baby showers for underserved income-restricted moms in partnership with county health services, hospitals, and pregnancy care centers. Additionally, we hold at least 1 women’s wellness event including presentations on reproductive health, financial wellness, mental health support, and maternal wellness. Our target demographic is the most vulnerable medically underserved populations (MUPs). DJTF's pillars of engagement are:
- addressing disparities and gender gaps
- advocating justice
- creating a better future where women can thrive
The community baby shower and maternal health fair provides a holistic maternal, neonatal, infant, and postpartum care program that speaks to the physical and emotional needs of MUPs. Each baby shower and maternal health fair supplies up to 100 moms with diapers, nursing supplies, postpartum supplies, formula, baby clothes, bottles, breastmilk storage supplies, diaper bags, and more. Moms can also get screened for items such as blood pressure and glucose. Annual conferences continue outreach efforts to promote women’s overall wellness by offering presentations on at least 3 areas of our mission. Past and present focus remains on early detection, symptom education, diagnostic tools and more. In partnership with healthcare systems and other community advocates, we also provide health screenings and connect attendees with local service providers.
